One Eight Distilling readies for October opening

One Eight Distilling expects to open its Ivy City tasting room to the public in late October and start producing its craft spirits by the end of this month, the distillery said in a Sept. 6 tweet.

Elevation DC reports that One Eight will start with a white whiskey (not aged) and vodka, followed by gin. The space is 12,000 square feet.

Taste of Georgetown returns Sept. 13

Taste of Georgetown moves to K Street, between Wisconsin and  this year. Now in its 21st year, the food-and-drink festival will feature epicurean delights from 35 restaurants, as well as a craft beer and wine pavilion.

There’s also live music, a cupcake eating competition and an Iron Chef-style competition among three Georgetown chefs: Chef Girard Pangaud of Malmaison, Chef Kristy Cleaveland of Degrees at The Ritz Carlton, and Chef Melanie Kurtz of Paolo’s.

Entry is free, but you need to purchase tasting tickets for food and drinks.

Cakepop store opening near zoo

Soon you’ll have a place to go to grab sweet treats for the kids after seeing giant panda Bao Bao. Baked by Yael is opening across the street from the National Zoo in Woodley Park later this year. It touts on its website that the storefront will be DC’s first cakepoppery. It currently sells its confections online and caters birthday parties, baby showers and corporate events.
